Author Interview: Gwen Hayes + A Giveaway

Gwen Hayes lives in the Pacific Northwest with her real life hero, their children, and the pets that own them.

She writes books for teen readers about love, angst, and saving the world. Her debut novel, FALLING UNDER, will be released in March of 2011 by NAL.

Baffled by the fact that not everyone has people talking to each other in their head all the time, Gwen decided maybe she should start writing down what they say. She told her family she wanted to be a writer in 2007, they all nodded, and the adventures began.

Gwen is represented by Jessica Sinsheimer of the Sarah Jane Freymann Agency. You can also find Gwen every other Friday at The Fictionistas, the coolest YA blog in the whole universe, and just about every day she's tweeting something nonsensical on her Twitter page. She also keeps her blog updated with the latest news.

When did it hit you that your book is going to be on bookstore shelves and people are going to be able to walk in and buy it?
Thanks for inviting me to your blog! I really love the book blogger community. Everyone is so passionate about YA and books in general. It makes me so happy.

Each step on my publishing journey has been really exciting, but I think the holy-cow-this-is-really-real-for-real moment actually came when I saw Falling Under listed for pre-order on Amazon. I thought of all the books that I have been so excited to buy that I ordered before they were released and realized that someone might want my book that much.
What were your first thoughts when you saw the cover for FALLING UNDER?
I'm not going to lie. I totally cried. It was so much more than I could have hoped for. I can't stress enough how awesome the art department at NAL connected with the feeling of the book. I blew the jpg up and my husband framed it for me. That model, by the way, is very sweet. And she reads YA books, too.
I absolutely adore the cover! And your hubby is so sweet to blow it up and frame it for you.
Did you create a playlist for Falling Under? If so, care to share a few songs?
I do create playlists for every book I write. I can’t always listen to lyrics while writing, but the act of making the playlist helps me learn things about my characters—and I listen while I’m doing other things when I'm supposed to be writing. (ahem, Solitaire) The soundtrack for Falling Under and the sequel are mostly eerie and haunting. You can view my playlist here:
You have to listen to the playlist. I love it AND Gwen included several songs by Neverending White Lights. My heart is overjoyed :D
Do you have a specific place where you love to write?
I do almost all of my writing on the Most Comfortable Couch in the World. Maybe some day, I'll have an office...but it will have to be one heck of desk chair if it’s going to compete with that couch. I'm not even joking.
If you ever do get an office, I have have a feeling it's going to have an inferiority complex when compared to the Most Comfortable Couch in the World. But maybe the Most Comfortable Desk Chair in the World will be able to handle the pressure.
If you could be any paranormal creature, what would you be and why?
I would not want to be any paranormal creature. I like being human. I think human beings are pretty nifty. Also, unlike my characters, I would never date one either.
Dating paranormal creatures always leads to dangerous situations and near death. You are a smart lady, Gwen.
Do you have a favorite book-to-movie adaptation? Any books that you’re dying to see turned into movies?
My favorite book-to-movie adaptation is The Princess Bride. I adore everything about that movie. It had it all: grand romance, action, comedy, and a giant. I think giants need to make a comeback. Maybe my next book.

As for books I'd love to see turned into movies...there’s this one called Falling Under.....
Oh, The Princess Bride, how I love you. And if anyone has already read Falling Under, I'm sure you'll agree with me in saying that it would look spectacular on the big screen. I'm picturing certain creeptastic scenes right now...
Just because I'm curious: As a fan of Joss Whedon, how do you feel about a Buffy reboot without him?
I refuse to acknowledge Buffy without Joss.
Ditto. Buffy without Joss is like cake without the frosting. It's just wrong.
What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you?
All the crazy stuff happens inside my head. The rest of my life is really, really boring. I mean, I like it—but it’s not going to sell tabloids. “Oh look, she’s knitting again.” *yawn*
What Gwen meant, was that her boring life consists of her going all ninja with her knitting needles and defending her Most Comfortable Couch in the World from the hazards of spilled drinks and food, whilst battling the monsters in the stories in her head. It's a difficult task, but authors like Gwen are always up to the challenge.
And the most important question last: What is your favorite kind of cookie?
I like snickerdoodles. No, peanut butter. No, snickerdoodles...
Normally I'd say snickerdoodles win, hands down, but peanut butter cookies are full of yum!

She lives in the Pacific NW! I'll have to see if there's more info on where... I'm in the Pacific NW, but it's a fairly large area. She could be in Portland, or be in Seattle. Portland would be nice, then I could go to a signing for sure! I'll definitely be watching for one...
That comfy couch sounds really nice, my couch is just too squishy and no longer very comfy.
Off to check out her website!

Thanks for the awesome interview and giveaway!
