Breathless Reads Tour - NYC Books of Wonder Recap

The Breathless Reads Tour kicked off Thursday night in New York City at Books of Wonder and I was there! The authors in attendance were Beth Revis (Across the Universe), Brenna Yovanoff (The Replacement), Ally Condie (Matched), Andrea Cremer (Nightshade), and Kirsten Miller (The Eternal Ones).

Check out the remaining Breathless Reads Tour stops

The trip was long, but definitely a fun one. Cars, trains, and hours in enclosed spaces wasn't bad at all thanks to my fantastic travel buddies/bloggers: Danielle from Frenzy of Noise, Gail from Ticket to Anywhere, Danielle from Overflowing Shelf, and Jen from The Secret Life of a Bibliophile.

Beth Revis, Brenna Yovanoff, Ally Condie, Andrea Cremer, Kirsten Miller

All the authors were milling about beforehand and were chatting with readers, bloggers, and anyone that would venture over. We had brought tons of cookies with us and they all seemed to enjoy them. Whenever I interview authors, the favorite cookie question is going in there and I will be bringing those cookies (if they aren't some super sekrit, homemade by your mom/sister/brother-in law) along with me. Beth Revis got snickerdoodles from me and she LOVED them...so says her blog :-)

Here are some highlights from the Q&A

Brenna Yovanoff
Describe your book in 6 words or less:
Andrea: Wolves, witches, fate or free will.
Ally: Story of a girl who learns to choose (she said that's more than 6 words after this)
Brenna: Strange boy discovers monsters, answers, kissing
Beth: Murder mystery in space

What is you favorite thing about your main character?
Ally: Cassia is brave
Beth, Brenna, Ally
Brenna: Mackie isn't very brave, but he does the hard stuff anyway.
Beth: Amy is strong, but can break and Elder is not really strong, but can become strong.

What book character would you have liked to have been when you were younger?
Andrea: Anne of Green Gables - so she could marry Gilbert Blythe
Ally: Laura Ingalls Wilder
Brenna: Harriet the spy
Beth: Edmund Pevensie from the Narnia series
Jen, Me, Gail, Kirsten, Danielle, Dani

Funny early stories?
Kirsten: Wrote a story called The Alien Mind in elementary school - she'd still write something like this today.
Ally: Wrote story called The Party when she was four about pregnant unicorns.
Brenna: Never finished her stories, so they were all riddles with cliffhanger endings. Also wrote a story about a dog that got to ride in a hot air balloon.
Beth: Also loved unicorns and wrote a 10 chapter (1 page=1 chapter) story about her unicorn necklace that she dropped in a barn and it came to life.

Me, Jen, Ally, Dani, Gail, Danielle
Hardest line to write, first or last?
Kirsten: First because everything starts there.
Andrea: The last line because it has to be perfect
Beth: The line that is exactly in the middle of the book because you're not really trying there. (loved that answer)

What book would you have liked to have been written when you were growing up?
Beth: Harry Potter
Brenna: The Ruby Oliver series
Ally: John Green's novels and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Andrea: Books by John Green, David Levithan, and Laurie Halse Anderson
Kirsten: The Attolia series by Megan Whalen Turner

The authors also played a game of 'Would You Rather' featuring unappealing scenarios from each other's books. You can watch that for yourself below:
