Author Interview: Beth Revis

Beth Revis‘s debut novel, Across the Universe, is coming from Razorbill/Penguin in Spring 2011. A former high-school English teacher, Beth can’t help but blog about writing, grammar, and publishing at Writing it Out. She is the founder of the new popular dystopian blog, the League of Extraordinary Writers and blows off steam by trying to come up with something witty in 140 characters or less, lusting after books on GoodReads, or wasting time on Facebook. Beth is represented by Merrilee Heifetz at Writers House.
*Bio taken from Beth's website
When did it hit you that you're going to be a published author and other people will be able to walk into a bookstore and buy your book?
A lot of people say it's when they get the ARCs, but for me, it was when I saw the hardcover copy of my book--taking the jacket off, looking at the stamped cover, seeing the text complete. That was when it felt real.
What were your first thoughts when you saw the cover for Across the Universe?
I thought it was so cool that they made the cover reversible! I really think that the book can appeal to a lot of people--for example, half the book is told from a girl's POV, but half is told from a boy's too--having a reversible cover makes me think the book will grab the attention of both boys and girls. I sort of look at the kissing cover as Amy's, and the blueprint cover as Elder's. There's something poetic about both narrators getting their own cover.
Where do you do your best writing?
Not so much where, but when: when I have a super-tight deadline prompting me to finish NOW.
Is there anything you absolutely need while writing? (Drinks, snacks, music, etc.)
If I get really stuck and have no idea where to go in the story, what I need most is legal note-pads and a nice pen--I take to the bed and sketch outlines and ideas until I know enough to go on with the story on my computer.
If you could live in one book for a day, what would it be?
I want to go to Narnia!!! Or maybe Hogwarts....
I can't blame you! I want to live in a world with Bin Bons too ; )

Do you have a favorite book-to-movie adaptation? Any books that you’re dying to see turned into movies?
So many! I think the latest Narnia adaptations were great (especially the first one), and I even love the cheesy BBC adaptation, too. Scott Pilgrim is brilliant as a graphic novel or a movie. I think Lord of the Rings was beautifully done.

As for books I'd like to see turned into a movie... I'd say Hunger Games, but that's already in the works. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan would make a great scary flick, and I think the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld might be really cool.
What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you?
Hmmm...that's a toughie. A lot of crazy stuff has happened to me! But most recently, I was in line for Stephanie Perkins' signing for ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS and struck up a conversation with the girl in front of me. We introduced ourselves and talked a long time (obviously, everyone in the city had come to see the awesome Stephanie!). At the end of the line, we got our books signed, and the girl looked up my blog on my phone--and then freaked a little when she realized who I was! :D
Aww, that's awesome and totally something I would do

And the most important question last: What is your favorite kind of cookie?
Snickerdoodles!
I make some mean Snickerdoodles...and now I'm hungry.

I totally love her answer about needing a deadline to write! I procrastinate, and my best work comes from procrastination, for sure! Great interview, Nikki and Beth! :)

Great interview! I believe a movie for the Uglies series is in the works, so she won't have to wait long!

Snickerdoodles rock! lol. Yes, I'd love to see the Uglies series made into a movie as long as they'd stay true to the books. Great interview. :D

Awesome interview, Nikki! Beth sounds really great and so much fun. I can't wait to read her novel. I've been swooning over the cover since the first moment I saw it. So beautiful! =)

Yay for snickerdoodles! :)

I really enjoyed this book--I was thrilled to see some true sci-fi published for a YA audience. There's not enough of it, in my opinion.

I had no idea the hardback has a reversible cover, though--I got hold of an ARC, which only has the "Amy" cover. Now I'll have to check out the hardback!
