Author Interview: Steve Cushman

Steve Cushman, author of Heart With Joy, was kind enough to do a little interview with me.

There are a lot of little tidbits about birds and different foods in the book. Did you have to do any research for Heart With Joy to include all of that?
No research was needed on this book. It was a very personal book for me in that I was able to write about many things I love: writing, birds, cooking, etc.... In general, I don't think of writing as particularly hard but this one was enjoyable because I was able to put down my thoughts on things that I enjoy.

Do you have a particularly favorite dish that Julian whips up?
I like that salmon dish mentioned in the book and make it about once a week.

As an author who also works full-time, do you ever find it difficult to get time to sit down and write?
I write in the mornings before the rest of the house is up. I write for an hour or two when the house is quiet and before my 'work' takes over my life. It's difficult sometimes staying motivated, but I can't imagine my life without writing. Like anything you want to do, you have to make sacrifices. In my case, this might be sleep, but if you want to write it is what you do

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
You just have to do it. You have to somehow carve out writing time and sit down in that chair and get the work done. Every writer I know also loves to read, so I think reading is as important as writing. Like I mentioned above, I work a full-time, Monday through Friday type job and I find time. I talk to friends who want to write, and say they don't have time, but they can quote lines from every season of Lost or Mad Men. You just have to make the commitment to get the work done. And when you are doing that, trust that eventually things will happen and you'll get better at writing.
(Very well said! I'm figuring this all out now doing NaNoWriMo. It seems like there's not enough time in the day, but there always is. Prioritizing is the problem.)

Is there anything you absolutely need while writing (certain foods, drinks, music, etc.)?
To me the perfect writing situation is a steaming cup of coffee and silence. Not that I always get that, but it is what I prefer.

Were any of the characters in Heart With Joy modeled after people in your life?
Mrs. Peters is similar to my neighbor, Barbara, in that they are both bird lovers. Barbara and I have had many conversations about birds over our fences.

Are you currently working on anything? If so, would you like to share a description or snippet?
I'm pretty busy right now promoting Heart With Joy, and working full time, but I do have another YA novel that is waiting for me once I have some time.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
A big part of Heart With Joy is about following your heart, pursuing your dreams, I'd say please don't ever give up on your dreams. You'll encounter nay-sayers and dream-crushers, those people who say you can't do this or that, but don't listen to them. You are the only one who knows what is truly important to you.
(I couldn't agree more)

I want to give a HUGE thanks to Steve for stopping by my blog and answering these questions. It was a pleasure getting to know him a little more.
