Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Title: Paranormalcy
Author: Kiersten White
Publisher: HarperTeen
Hardcover, 335 pages
Date Published: August 31, 2010

Description (Taken from Goodreads):
Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

Oh bleep! I loved this book! (Once you read it, you’ll understand that). Kiersten White’s take on a paranormal organization, known as IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency), that bags and tags our feisty little vamps, werewolves, zombies, faeries, etc. was exciting and, best of all, fun. That’s right. Paranormalcy is a fun book to read.

There was never a moment or chapter or anything that I felt bored or disconnected from Evie, our maybe not so, not so paranormal badass who sees through glamours. From start to finish, Kiersten White kept me entertained. That’s probably due in large part to Evie being wicked awesome. She’s 16, works for a paranormal agency, carries a pink taser, and she’s hilarious. Oh, and aside from her paranormal life, she is obsessed with Easton Heights, a teen soap opera type show, and loves shopping and all things pink.

Sarcasm and comedic dialogue abounds in this book and White uses it so naturally that it just flows through the characters, who, by the way, are all brilliant. Not only is Evie all kinds of awesome, but Lend is swoonworthy and mysterious all at the same time. I have to say that I was completely captivated by Reth though. He is seductive and salacious, yet completely terrifying in the best way. Love interests aside, Raquel, Evie’s mother figure and ‘boss,’ has the best sighs. Yes, sighs. And the ‘bad guy’ in this situation is so much more than I imagined.

Evie’s discovery of who she is and just what is causing the deaths of paranormals around the globe is interesting and well-written. I felt like Evie was taking me along with her on her journey to be normal, while realizing that normal may never really be a possibility for her. And White’s take on all things paranormal had me more than intrigued and, oftentimes, grinning. Evie is a firecracker and you really need to read Paranormalcy yourself to truly understand this book’s awesomeness.

Opening line(s): “Wait – did you – You just yawned!” The vampire’s arms, raised over his head in the classic Dracula pose, dropped to his sides. ~ pg. 1

Favorite line(s): “That’s because you have no idea how precious normal is. Now.” I put my hands on my hips and looked around. “According to Easton Heights, a fistfight over a girl should be breaking out at some point today, followed by a tear-streaked catfight in the girl’s bathroom. Should I keep my eyes open? And, more important, do I join the fight or just watch?” ~ pg. 241

Thanks for your review. I don't read much paranormal stuff at all, but I've heard so many good things about this book that it's definitely on my TBR list now!
