Banned Books Reading Challenge

Steph Su from Steph Su Reads is hosting a Banned Books Reading Challenge that will run from September 1-October 15th. The challenge is in conjunction with Donna from Bites, who is hosting Ban This! to bring more awareness about book banning.
I've never had restrictions about the books I was allowed to read, either at home or in school. In fact, my school curriculum consisted of several banned books, so I feel privileged to not only have read so many of these banned books, but to have been taught the importance of each of the stories as I grew up. I can understand not allowing your own child to read certain books, but to insist that others do the same is ludicrous to me. My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird and that is always on the most frequently challenged/banned list. Many of my favorite books make the list, including 1984, A Separate Peace, The Giver, and the entire Harry Potter series. I love reading and to restrict others from the incredible worlds and characters that books can offer is not okay with me, so I'm happy to participate in this challenge and I implore you to do the same.

My goal for this challenge is to read at least 5 banned books, but I want to try for more. Here's the list I'll be reading from:
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury - REVIEW
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut - REVIEW
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Looking for Alaska by John Green - REVIEW
Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott - REVIEW
Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson - REVIEW
Unwind by Neal Shusterman
Jake Reinvented by Gordon Korman
I might re-read:
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Giver by Lois Lowry

The official ALA banned books week is September 25-October 2nd and both the aforementioned blogs, as well as several others, will be posting all month long to celebrate. To see a list of those blogs involved with Ban This! visit the official post for Ban This! 2010.
