Description (Taken from Goodreads)
Zara collects phobias the way other high school girls collect lipsticks. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.

Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has all the elements to keep teens rapidly turning the pages.

Need is a story about a seemingly normal girl who is forced to move to Maine after the loss of her father (stepfather really, but she views him as her father). Zara is devastated when her father dies of a heart attack and she’s more than a little angry when her mother sends her to live with her Grandma Betty. Once Zara starts settling in, she realizes it isn’t all that bad. She makes new friends and finds and even starts to like Nick Colt, a gorgeous guy with a hero complex. Things get a little more complicated when Zara and her new friends come to the conclusion that the creepy guy that’s been following and pointing at her is actually a pixie.

Need has everything you could want from a YA novel. There’s strong characters, action, creepy guys that point, and, of course, a little romance. Zara is so different from other leading female characters in YA novels because she is so strong. She isn’t necessarily physically strong, but she has her convictions and she sticks to them. Zara’s personality is definitely her own and her little quirks make her more interesting. I love the fact that she has an obsession with phobias. I've never seen it before in any book and it just gave Zara's character a little something extra.

There's a lot of emotion in Need as well. The blossoming romance between Zara and Nick is cutesy at times, but is more often sexy. Zara's relationship with Betty is funny because they banter and joke around, but I could always feel their love for one another. Zara's sadness over the loss of her father is a very strong point in the novel. When I was reading it, I could really feel the loss and despair Zara has without her dad, but I could also feel her desire to be able to rebuild. Moving to Maine forces Zara to come to terms with her dad's death and the whole pixie aspect of it just makes the story a little more complicated.

I don’t want to give too much away because Need is novel that I think everyone should read themselves. The story is enthralling, the characters are funny and well-developed, and the writing is fantastic. I’ve never been a huge fan of pixies or fairies, but Need grabbed hold of me and never let go. It’s a fast read that I enjoyed even more the second time around.

And the last few lines are absolute perfection.

Make sure you pick this one up and don’t forget that Captivate, the sequel to Need, is in stores now.

Opening line: Everybody has fears, right?

Favorite lines: Everybody has fears, right? But how many of us have my fear? Enough, it seems. Because there’s a name for it.
(I bet you want to know what it is now, huh? Go pick up Need and find out!)
